Tip #111: Are you short or long-waisted....

Women often are said to be either short-waisted or long-waisted. To figure out where your waist falls within your overall physique — your “waistedness” — follow these simple steps:

  1. Measure the distance between your armpit and your waist.
  2. Measure the distance between your waist and the bottom of your bum.
  3. Compare the measurements.
If the two measurements aren’t equal, you’re either short- or long-waisted: If the first measurement is shorter, you’re short-waisted. If the second measurement is shorter, you’re long-waisted.

Tip #106: Four Steps to Easy Holiday Shopping

1.  Have a Plan
  • Make a list of WHO you are buying for
  • Fill in HOW MUCH you are spending on each person**
  • Fill in WHAT you are buying for each person
** If you really have no idea what to buy for a particular person, at the very least set a price limit.  That way you won’t be tempted to spend too much out of desperation.

2. Do your research
Spend a little time checking out the various options & brands available for each item you think you will buy.  Read the reviews, figure out some base prices, & make a list of at least your top 3 picks.  Narrow down the field so you know what to look for.

3.  Tackle Black Friday like a pro
I am personally not a big fan of Black Friday shopping. I would much rather stay in my P.J.'s, drink my coffee, and save big bucks on Cyber Monday.  But that doesn’t mean I can't offer some tips:

  • Develop a plan of attack   Know what time each store opens, and which “must-have” items are at each store.
  • Know the store policies.  Bring a copy with you, if possible.
  • Bring the store ads along.  This is useful for price matching.
  • Get gift receipts!  You may need them later.
  • Look for coupons ahead of time.  Save even more money!
  • Compare prices online.  There is no sense fighting the crowds at 3am if you don’t have to.
4.  Shop online (refer to Tip #105)
I am a HUGE fan of online shopping!!  Besides clearance items and thrift store finds, I consistently find the best deals on-line.  The selection and prices just can’t be beat!!!!!!!!!

Tip #104: The Chunky Cardigan

The Chunky Cardigan.... the Jacket Alternative...

The CHUNKY Cardigan is NOT meant to be belted - or slimming.  When deciding, choose a more relaxed fit.

Proportion is the key if you don't want the sweater to wear you.  Keep your bottom half slender, and be wary of going too long.  If the sweater falls below mid-thigh, it can look draggy.

These Cardigans are especially cute with winter accessories. Try one with a long scarf, leather gloves, and booties.

Tip #103: How to Spruce Up Last Years Coat...

Don't want to buy a new coat?

Play around with widths and colors, in either the same shade as your coat or a different hue.

For a monochromatic look, coordinate the belt to match the coat. A skinny belt looks well on petite frames.

Consider other elements on the coat.  Different colored buttons? Try matching the belt to the buttons. Is the coat a masculine cut (i.e. double-breasted)?  Try a buckle.

An extra-wide belt on a contrasting color makes the biggest statement.  It's perfect on taller types with long torsos.

Tip #102: What to buy in October....

Swim suits are on sale now!

I know, I know.... the tan has faded and those lights in the dressing rooms are not flattering.

But, October is when bathing suits are at the cheapest.

Don't forget the kids!!!  This children's bathing suit is on sale at Target for $4.54!!

Tip #101: Why you can wear different sizes...

Why are you a Size 6 in some brands and a 10 in others?

Most companies who mass-market start with a Size 8 production pattern, which gets shifted larger or smaller depending on their clientele.  So, a high-fashion 8 isn't typically as big as a mass-market brand's 8."

Even in Europe, where measurements are standardized by law, there can be some variation because a designer may decide to fix a garment's waistline above (or below) a woman's natural waist.  The best way to ensure a good fit is to try everything on - and trust the mirror instead of the digit on the label.

Tip #100!!! Thank you for Reading!!!

Meet Chrystal, an avid Hip Bargain Chick follower!!   I met her when I spoke to her MOPS group in Spring 2011.  She contacted me a few months later and asked if we could go shopping and could I showcase her for Tip #100... here you go, Chrystal!

When we met to shop in June, she had a 5 month old baby.  She was still breast feeding and trying to lose the baby weight.  Her challenge was to not spend a lot of money and she needed something that wasn't in a sweat pant material :)

The Steps we took...
1.  KNOW WHAT COLORS LOOK GOOD ON YOU!!  Chrystal is a Summer - which means she looks best in bright, vivid colors. Grays are a good neutral color for a Summer as well.
2. UNDERSTAND YOUR BODY!!  Chrystal just had a baby.  She has great legs.  Accentuate the positive, minimize the negative!!  We also determined that a V-neck was her best friend.
3. DETERMINE YOUR STYLE!!  Chrystal knew what she was looking for... a super casual outfit that was great for nursing, but could be dressed up for a date with hubby.

Chrystal's total was $36.02 for 3 shirts. A brilliant blue stripped shirt from Forever21 was $15.54. A bright pink Gap ruffle (ruffles are 'in') was $14.49 and a Gap Red V-neck was $5.99.

Chrystal now had 3 different shirts to wear with khaki's, jeans and shorts.  Changing the shoes and accessories can also change the 'feel' of an outfit.

Thank you Chrystal!  Great Color on you :)

Tip #98: Fall SHOE Fashion 2011... on a budget!

Who doesn't love DSW?!?

I love the deals I can get on-line at DSW.
They have a greater selection on-line than in the stores.  If I find a shoe I like on-line, I see if it is the store near me - just in case I want to try it on first.  But, the nice thing about ordering on-line at DSW is you can easily return the shoes to the store AND get bigger discounts!!!

I just ordered Heeled Loafers (a fall trend) from DSW.  To get the most discounts, I did the following:
  1. Click on the Ebates link (to the left of this blog post under the 'TOTAL VISITS' counter).  Ebates gives 8% cash back on everything ordered from DSW, while ShopAtHome only gives 3%.
  2. Join Ebates (if you haven't done so already)... it is FREE!
  3. Search for DSW.
  4. Ebates will bring back all the coupon codes available for DSW at that time.
  5. Click on the coupon you want.
  6. Ebates will automatically open a new window of DSW.
  7. Order your shoes.
  8. DSW ACCEPTS MULTIPLE COUPON CODES!!! Keep on entering discount codes!  If they don't accept one, they may accept another!  For example, the shoes I ordered were on sale, free shipping code, a 10% off code, and double reward points.

The lace-up military boot is a trend.
The buckles are also found on many shoes this fall.

Suede, Lace-up, wedge heel and bootie.
This shoes has 4 of the fall trends in 1 shoe.

Chunk heel, patent leather pump.
God Bless those that can walk in these!

This black wedge shoe shouts comfy
and low on/off maintenance. Any shoe with height will
make you appear thinner!
These are a Hip Bargain Chick 'Everyday Wear" Winner!

Not sure where I would wear these,
but they are cute and trendy!
Wedge, platform, suede, bootie...
can't you see these on Gwen Stefani?
Military Boot with a twist!
Because the entire shoe is on a platform,
 the height difference between
the heel and the toe is not much...
making it easier to walk in.

LOVE boots.
SO excited for the colder weather.
 These wedge, buckle boots would
look amazing with skinny jeans!

Plaid is back!  Penny Loafer heels are in!
I got myself a pair in black (and not so high).

Are you seeing a theme?!?
I couldn't resist another military
lace-up bootie twist. Adorable.

For those of you who do NOT wear heels.
Stick with a flat penny loafer.
Patent leather makes it extra trendy.

Tip #97: What Hair Length is best for YOU!

Should you Go Short?
  • Is Your Hair Straight?  Pixie cuts are most flattering on fine to medium-thick hair that's straight or just a little wavy.
  • Do you have a Round Face with Petite features?  Cropped hair exaggerates an angular face, so a softer shape is ideal.
  • Do you have time for haircuts, but hate blow-drying? You could need a trim as often as every four weeks, but the day-to-day maintenance is minimal.
  • Are you stylish (or wanna be), but no-nonsense?  You want to wear the style, not have it wear you.
Short Hair opens up your face, elongates the neck, and sets off your eyes.

Should you Go Mid-Length?
  • Do you have 'big' hair?  If the answer is 'no', then great.  If you do, this length will require some pouf control, especially if it's curly and all one length.  If you have think, wavy hair, make sure you get plenty of layers (and invest in a good flatiron - I love my Chi!).
  • Do you have an angular face? More than any other length, this works for all face shapes. If you have a square or angular one, layers all over help soften it.  Round or Oval? Try a blunt cut.
  • Are you willing to invest a bit of time in your look?  Most mid-length cuts require some styling to look their best; a quick blow-dry, a dab of cream/gel/gloss and some serum for the ends.
  • Do you like 'playing it safe'? If yes, then this is the length for you.
Hair that hits under the chin or around the neck is very forgiving; it can easily be adjusted to suit specific features.

Should you Go Long?
  • Does your hair ever fall flat? Then probably not the length for you. Medium-to-thick strands work best with long hair to give it some heft or wave.
  • Is your face more Wide than Long?  Long hair flatters most face shapes. But, if you have an oblong one, do not wear it too long or pin-straight.
  • Do you LOVE playing with your hair? Of course, the pony tail is always an option.  But, to get healthy, beautiful long hair, you must invest some time in conditioning and blow-drying your hair.
  • Do you feel naked without hair?  Wear it down or wear it up, but have fun.
Hair that falls below your shoulders is so versatile, plus you only need trims every 8-12 weeks.

Tip #96: Accessories

Adding accessories to your wardrobe is the cheapest and easiest way to spruce things up and make you feel good!!

  • Jewelry
  • Hats/Headbands/Hair Accessories
  • Belts
  • Scarves
  • Handbags
  • Sunglasses
  • Shoes

  • Draw attention to your assets
  • Pull attention away from your trouble spots
  • Give a variety of looks to a single outfit
  • Make a garment look expensive
  • Revive or update classic clothing styles
  • Relate different items of your outfit to each other
  • Define your personal style

DON'T OVERDO IT!!!!  That's when the look falls apart and "ridiculous" comes together.

  • Choosing a focal point (only one statement piece at a time).
  • Choosing between large earrings and a large necklace, or any other pieces in close vicinity.
  • Refraining from exactly matching your accessories to your outfit or to each other (the vintage owl pendant loses its charm when you pair it with an owl bracelet and owl ring).

Pay attention to your body shape, what works with the outfit, and how much is too much, you can't go all that wrong :)

Tip #95: A Basic Fashion Tip Everyone should know!

Looking truly sexy (versus trampy) involves knowing what to bare - and what to keep under wraps.

Choose ONE (and only ONE) body part to show off.

  • If it's cleavage, don't show your legs - wear a long skirt, or pants.
  • If you want to wear a short skirt or shorts, stay covered on top.
  • Tight pants? Do NOT wear a skin tight shirt.

Tip #93 : Long Skirts are Back!!

The Fall 2011 runways at New York Fashion Week were absolutely inundated with long skirts: some narrow, some loose, some with high waists, some belted, some gathered, some wool, some printed, some to the ankles and some to the floor.

It’s a refreshing length and can flatter a lot of people when it’s done right.  Personally, I am VERY happy to see that the long skirt is back.  It is very forgiving of leg imperfections (of which I have many).

Define the waist.  The pictures below show a cinched in waist that helps accentuate the hour glass figure.  Fur is big this season.... wear a fur jacket (or any kind of jacket) over the skirt making sure that the hem line stops just at or below the widest part of your hips.

Tip #92: Slash Back-to-School Spending

Avoid paying retail for back-to-school items...

Start at Home..... you might be surprised by how many supplies are already in the house. Send the kids on a scavenger hunt; whoever finds the most items on the lists gets a prize.

Leave the kids at home... if you can!  You are more apt to avoid impulse buys if your daughter isn't there begging for a Justin Bieber notebook.

Shop Tax Free... Visit to find out about which days to shop tax free.  Virginia is August 5-7.

Get Classics for Free... Download books for no cost. Try

Make one trip to shop at a store that price-matches... Staples, Office Depot and Office Max all have price-match policies, meaning if you see an advertised price on a certain item, any of the three businesses will honor that figure (including instant rebates). So pore over the circulars, then save gas money.  Even better, shop during the tax-free weekend.

Hold out for the Fall Sales... No one needs 10 new fall outfits on the first day of school. Transition summer clothes by layering until stores start discounting... which usually starts in late September.

Swap before you shop... Clothing exchanges are fun to do with your friends.  Or try a website like  Also consider selling old sports equipment and instruments and using the credit or cash to buy the next size at

Tip #91: 2011 Fall trend #2

Tip #89: What to Wear if you are Busty

An ample bosom can present challenges.  Here are a few simple tips:
  1. Busty women sometimes have to worry where a necklace falls. Detailed dresses allow you to skip extra jewelry.  They also give the appearance of a very neat and tailored look, which can be hard to achieve for someone with a big chest.
  2. A built-in bustier offers lots of support - enough that most women won't need a bra.
  3. Try a silhouette that accentuates your waist and takes the focus off your bust.
  4. Add a little sparkle with drop earring, which also draw attention from your chest.
  5. No Tent Dresses.  You will look pregnant. Very pregnant.
  6. Embrace Knits... they are your friends.
  7. Medium V-Necks Love You.  A fitted medium dip V-neck with short sleeves that hits a couple inches above your elbow will work every time. The little bit of extra sleeve length balances your top and a slight V is sexy without being trampy.
  8. No Empire Waist Lines. As with tent dresses, you will look pregnant. Or at least not nearly as good as you could. Dresses that nip in at the waist and then flair out (A-line or circle skirts work miracles) provide a nice shape and balance.
  9. Go With A Combo Dress. There are these magical dresses that are made from t-shirt material on top and another, more dressy, material on the bottom.

Tip #88: Save Your Cell Phone Minutes

If your cell phone (or iPod Touch) has Wi-Fi access, download the free Skype application to call any friend in the network without using the minutes on your phone plan.

Tip #87: Shades for YOUR Face Shape

Do you lose you sunglasses all the time?  I DO...
Well, let's say that I lose expensive sunglasses.  The cheap ones I seem to keep around forever.  THAT is why I only buy cheap sunglasses.
Ross is my favorite store to buy cheap sunglasses.  Lots of styles to choose from and usually around the $5 price (give or take based on designer).

OVAL:  You can wear just about any style of sunglasses.  Try different trends!
ROUND: Choose narrows, rectangular frames to lengthen your face and downplay the fullness of your cheeks.
SQUARE: Try a glamorous, round Jackie O pair to soften the angles of your jawline.  Big frames make your face appear smaller.
OBLONG: To help your face look shorter, select taller lenses and check for side details to provide some width.

Tip #86: How to Wear a MaxiSkirt

What is a Maxi Skirt?  It is definitely a flash back to the 70's (that would be 1970, not 1870!)  Maxiskirt is the opposite of a Miniskirt.... instead of being short, a Maxiskirt is ankle length-skirt.
Another plus?  With a Maxiskirt, you don't have to shave your legs :)

So, how do you wear a Maxiskirt that enhances your figure instead of making you look frumpy?

  1. It's not for cleaning floors.  While the skirt should be long, you don't want it dragging on the sidewalk.  Depending on your height, your may need platforms or wedges to ensure the hem is at least an inch of the ground.
  2. Loose Bottoms require fitted tops.  Otherwise, you'll be the girl swimming in her outfit.  Consider a slim T, shrunken blazer, or a cropped chunky knit.
  3. Show Some Skin. Since you are completely covered from the waist down, contrast with a V-neck or an off-the-shoulder blouse and sandals.
REMEMBER... this style may not be for your body type.  Just because it is in-style does not mean you have to wear it.

Tip #85: False Lashes

LOVE false eyelashes now that I am not afraid of them :)  I wore them to my 20th high school reunion (see picture).

  1. Separate your own fringe evenly by applying a lightweight mascara.  If you curl your eyelashes, curl them gently/lightly.
  2. For individual lashes, handle with a slanted-tip tweezer, dab on a pinhead of glue. Gently tap lash to your palm to remove any excess.  Allow adhesive to partially dry by fanning for 5 seconds.
  3. For full eyelash set, squeeze eyelash glue onto the back of your hand and run the eyelash along it. Blow softly from edge to edge to make the glue a little less runny to apply your lashes. Press from end to end and hold until the glue dries (30 seconds to a minute, or sometimes less depending upon the adhesive). This allows the glue to set so that when you lift your fingertips from it, the lashes won't come along for the ride.
  4. Position false lashes at the roots of your natural ones.  Apply from outer eye, three quarters of the way to the center of the eye.  Once you've placed them, you're done! False lashes don't need more mascara.
The biggest mistake people make is applying the false lashes above instead of just at, or a little below their own lash line.

Put on eye makeup before lashes and foundation, so you don't end up removing foundation when wiping away flecks.

You can trim down falsies after you've applied them if they seem too long.  Use manicure scissors to snip from the inner to the outer corners of your eye, leaving the outer lashes longest.

The following are the best lashes listed most expensive to least (as consistently reported on various websites):
  2. MAC
  5. ARDELL

Tip #84: How to Wear White Pants!!

It is White Pant season again!
A pair of crisp White Pants/Capris look SO GOOOOOD with a color that makes your skin glow (and NOT from sweat)!!!

But, if not worn correctly, they can be unforgiving of every lump and dimple... yuk!
  1. Consider "Nude" (i.e. undies that match your skin color) shapewear that smooths your waist and thighs for a leaner silhouette.
  2. To eliminate visible panty lines, select seamless styles or a Thong.
  3. If the front pockets show through the garment, turn it inside out, sew the pockets shut near the seam and trim them off.

If you know you are going to the store to try on white pants, PLEASE wear the appropriate undergarments!  (Or you may never find a pair you like).

Tip #83: What to wear if you are CURVY

No matter your body type, the goal is to appear to have an hourglass.  If you have a curvy figure, then this will be easy to achieve.

Here are some additional ways to enhance your God-given curves :)
  • A medium-to-low neckline accentuates the upper portion of the body and balances out the overall look.
  • Find a dress that nips in at the waist.
  • Keep away from oversize or tops; they don't enhance your natural figure.
  • Opt for form-fitting cuts.

Tip #82: Jumpsuits & Rompers: Not Just for Toddlers Anymore!

OMG... How did it get to be June 7th?!?  Shame on me for going over a week without a tip.  I have been working hard on getting my last 2 booklets published (Summer and Autumn).  Winter and Spring Color Booklets are available at or e-mail me at

On another side note.... was so excited this morning to receive a text from a college roommate, Deb.  She bought a Spring Color Analysis Booklet a few weeks ago.  She went shopping (with her book in her purse) and bought her first Violet colored shirt that looks fabulous on her!  Rock on, Deb!!

Apparently, they aren't just for toddlers or mechanics this summer :)  I have seen them short and long.  How do you wear this trend without looking like a child?
  • If the Jumpsuit is long sleeved, try cuffing the sleeve and adding bangle and/ or chunky bracelets.
  • Try wrapping a sweater around the waist or add a funky belt.
  • For the floral jumpsuit, add height with espadrille wedges.
  • Black Jumpsuit?  Add a statement necklace and high-heeled sandals.

Tip #81: Learn Lipstick Lingo

I am not much of a lipstick connoisseur because I am allergic to most brands :(
Knowing which lipstick colors look good with your skin tone is very important (but that is a whole other blog tip or you can buy a Color Booklet from :))

Right now, let's concentrate on the glossary (no pun intended) of old and 'new' lipstick lingo:

This classic texture is especially pretty in neutral shades.
Frosty lipstick is new again thanks to tiny light-reflecting particles that impart sheen.
GEL:  Full-coverage formulas tend to be thick and sticky. Gel lip color is less waxy.
GLOSSY:  A range of finishes and hues makes gloss a favorite. Just be prepared to reapply often!
MATTE:  An extremely pigmented formula that offers total coverage but shows every little mistake. Make it neat by applying it with a lip brush.
MIST:  Burberry makes a 'Mist' lipstick that delivers a soft, silky wash in one swipe that is supposed to last up to 3 hours.
The color only looks intense; this semiglossy formula is a fresh way to wear brights.

SHINE:  Equal parts high-shine gloss and creamy lipstick.  It goes on light but can be layered for more intensity.
STAIN:  Its water-based formula dries quickly, tinting lips with a transparent wash of long-lasting color.
CANDY:  Yves Saint Laurent makes a Sheer Candy that gives lips a stain with a pop of pigments in a balm-like base (what ever that means.... haven't tried it)

Tip #80: Prints can Flatter

A pretty all-over pattern can do far more for your figure than a simple solid.  It creates an optical illusion, obscuring unwanted lumps and bumps by keeping the eye moving.
The following pictures are all Plus-Size models and they look amazing!
If you have nice legs,
try a shorter dress.
Zebra Print!
Go for that hourglass figure!
Love the shoes,
but be careful they don't make your legs look shorter.

Maxi Dress. Cinch at the slimmest part
of waist to create hourglass

Tip #79: Hip Bargain Chick Travels to NYC

It has been a week since my last Tip and I apologize.  Last week was frenzied with preparations for my girl weekend getaway to the Big Apple.  A special thank you to my Le Moyne College girls for making it so much fun!  Helene, you will always be the best 'Julie, Cruise Director' :)

Lots of people watching (and walking - my feet were telling me we walked most of Manhattan).  It was a beautiful day in the city and we saw a lot of Maxi dresses with scarves.  Gladiator sandals were definitely out in force.   Horizontal stripes were on shirts and dresses.

With 6 of us girls embarking on a 1 day trip into the city, it was hard to decide on where to go.  But, I did get to walk into a few thrift shops in the East Village.  The prices were higher, but there were definitely more designer vintage clothing.  I didn't buy anything.... didn't find anything worth lugging around the city with me all day and all night.

The BEST DEAL of the trip was the bus fare.... my girlfriend and I traveled on the Tripper bus (  She paid $8 for her round trip ticket ($1 going and $5 coming home with $1 convenience charge per way) and I paid $13 ($10 going and $1 coming home with the convenience charge).  At exactly 2 months from the day you want to travel, the tripper bus offers fares from $1.  The cost increases as more people buy until it hits the maximum price of $25 each way.  Comfy seats, electrical outlets and WiFi made the trip easy and uneventful.

I am DEFINITELY heading to NYC more often!!!

Tip #78: Mall Adventures and the Victoria Secret's Miraculous Bra!!

Hope all you mom's had a wonderful Mother's Day!  My weekend was awesome... massage on Saturday, shopping (by myself) on Sunday.  I hadn't gone to the mall in SO long!  Which is totally unacceptable for Hip Bargain Chick :)

I had a $10 off coupon at JC Penney (with no minimum purchase).  My goal was to find something for $10 and not pay anything, but THAT didn't happen (which is what JC Penney is banking on - and I fell right into their trap).  I perused the clearance racks and found 2 shirts and 1 sweater to buy.  The total came to $19 - $10 coupon ($9 total).  Not bad!!!

Then I headed over to Victoria Secret.  I read a Consumer Reports article that the new Miraculous Bra that claimed to increase your bust by 2 sizes looked natural.  Since my breasts are now shriveled from breast-feeding, I wanted to regain some of their former glory.  I ended up trying on every bra they had to see what fit best.  I am SO glad I took the time to do that.  The salesgirl was SO helpful and patient.  Let me tell you.... the Miraculous Bra IS truly miraculous!!!  Hip Bargain Chick couldn't buy a bra for full price, though :)  So, I went home and won an eBay bid (and got 3% cash back from  I got the Multi-Way that you can wear strapless, regular, or criss-cross.  The thick band helps with back fat.  The 1 drawback is that you definitely have to hand wash it.

My new $24 coat!!
A trip to the mall wouldn't be complete without a stop at Forever 21.  I stocked up on cami's in every color for $2.50 each.  I also found a new winter coat!!!  SO EXCITED!  $24.00.  Still need to try on the coat with my new bra to make sure I can still button it (heh, heh).

Tip #77: Check out this Entire Outfit for Less than $30!!!!!

My girlfriend, Rachel, leaves for Hawaii on Tuesday (I know, I wish too).  She needed a few more outfits to bring with her.  So, we went shopping!  Love shopping!  And I definitely loved what we put together (in less than an hour:)).

Forever 21 Dress
is a Coral color.
The DRESS is a beautiful Coral color, which is totally in for the season.  It is going to look amazing with her tan!  Another plus?  COMFORT!  It is super comfy.  AND easy to pack.  Low maintenance - it won't wrinkle.  Wear just the dress with flip-flops for day and dress it up with platform shoes and jewelry for night.

Forever 21 Gold Bangles = $4.80
Forever 21 Earrings = $3.80
The EARRINGS we chose were a little out of her comfort zone.  Rachel does not usually wear big earrings.... but with gold bangles on her wrists, her hair down and no necklace, they are a perfect compliment to her dress.  The round earring also compliment her face.... Rachel has a long, oval face.... round earrings balance her out.  Rachel could also wear her her up with a flower in it, simple earrings and a simple necklace.  SO MANY POSSIBILITIES!!!

Forever 21 Shoes
are neutral platform wedges.
LOVE the shoes.  $7.50!!!  AND she says they are comfortable.  I just wish they had them in my size.

Happy 10th Wedding Anniversary to Rachel and Greg.  Rachel - you are beautiful and radiant!!

Tip #76: Save BIG with Mystery travel Site

What are Mystery Travel Sites?  They are the sites that don't reveal the names of the travel providers until after you pay.  Scary?

Who are they?  The big ones are,, and Travelocity just came out with Top Secret Hotels.  According to on-line analysis, is definitely the cheapest of the cheap.

How do they work?  Travel providers look to unload inventory on the cheap.  But, they mask the identity of those travel companies so as not to scare away full-price customers.  To make the blind process less blind, the sites post (incomplete) lists of participating travel suppliers.

  • Car rentals are a safe bet with Hotwire and because only major brands participate.
  • Airline bookings are more of a gamble with hidden fees and lesser-known carriers.
  • also offers the option to bid on travel deals.  One good strategy is to check out prices on Hotwire and then trim 10 or 20% off the best price to make a bid.  Or check out for tips.
  • Don't use these sites if you might need to change your travel plans.  All sales are final.
  • Plan to pay booking fees.  These charges are usually more than offset by savings.
  • Print a copy of your receipt or confirmation as proof of purchase and take it with you just in case.
  • Go to aggregator sites like and the sits of travel providers to check rates before you book on discount sites.

Tip #75: Lengthen Legs with a Skin-Colored Shoe

Nothing elongates a leg like high-heeled footwear

The effect is even more pronounced if you select a pair that matches your skin tone.

Tip #74: Choosing the Right Belt for your Body Type

A belt can make you look fat and chunky—or create a waist and a sexy silhouette. It’s all about choosing the right style of belt for your body type, and knowing exactly where to put it.

Why the belt is your best friend
Belts are a really cheap and easy way of adding a little drama to a simple outfit. It is also a very good slimming tool, because it can accentuate curves (or create a curve where there was none), while simultaneously drawing attention away from parts of the body that you want to play down.

The trick is in the proportion. Nobody has a perfect body, just learn and understand what works for your body type.

Short Torso
The great thing about being short waisted is you probably have fantastically long legs. You want to help add to that sense of length.  The first thing to do is to avoid really thick belts, which will totally overwhelm your already short waist. Pick thinner belts, and then position them a bit low on the hips. This makes your upper body look longer.

Long Torso
A wide version will provide balance between your top and bottom halves. You’re lucky enough to have the body type that can pull off a thicker belt. But your particular body challenge is to make your legs look longer. So, position your belt higher up the waistline (and add to the illusion by wearing high-waisted pants). Here’s another trick: picking a belt color that is very close to the color of your pants gives the sense of a long, unbroken line, which also helps you look taller.

Petite Figure
Larger belts will overwhelm your small frame, so avoid them at all costs. It’s also best to pick a belt color that is very close to the rest of your outfit—or even choose monochromatic scheme (different shades of the same color) from shirt to shoes. That’s because a belt in a completely different color will “cut” your body and make you look even smaller.

If you want to add color to your outfit, choose a contrasting bag or necklace or earrings (which will draw attention to the face). You can also play with different textures and fabrics—for example, a sequin trim or a touch of lace.

Fuller Figures
Choose belts in colors that closely match your outfits, and avoid big belt buckles that can draw even more attention to your waistline. Choose a simple belt in a dark color and a matte finish.

Boyish Figure
If you have a very slim, boyish figure, try a skinny belt worn low on your hips to create the illusion of curves.

Tip #73: Cleaning Windows

Spring is here!!  Love the weather, but hate the cleaning that I feel HAS to be done (from societal pressure or childhood brainwashing - not sure)
  • Begin by filling in small cracks or scratches with toothpaste.
  • Wash your windows on a cloudy day. The heat from direct sunlight can dry the cleaning product before you have time to properly finish the job.
  • For the larger glass surfaces, use a long-handle squeegee to prevent streaks, much like you would on car windows or glass shower doors
  • Tackle those pesky corners with Q-tips. Their small surface area allows you to hit those hard-to-reach spots and they'll absorb the residue instead of spreading it around.
  • For a blinding shine, polish your windows with clean cotton tee-shirts, cloth diapers or even a new blackboard eraser. Make sure that your windows have been dried before polishing.
  • Always clean from top to bottom to prevent drips, and remember that cleaning solutions can often harm woodwork. Be careful not to let your products drip onto the windowsill.
  • If you can't seem to ditch the streaks (or if you run out of paper towels) clean and polish your windows with newspaper. Not only is it absorbent and lint-free, it also leaves a film that is resistant to dirt.
  • An easy alternative to cleaning solutions is to use a recipe of 1/4 cup vinegar, 2 cups water and 1/2 cup liquid cleaning soap.
